The parish church "Unsere liebe Frau" (Our dear lady) occupies a special pastoral and historical position within the archbishopric of Salzburg. On the one hand, Mariapfarr is the mother parish of the Lungau region and on the other hand it has remained an important and traditional place of pilgrimage.
This might explain why such a representative church emerged in a region which is geographically rather isolated. Moreover, it is richly decorated with relics, liturgical tools and votive gifts.
In order to present these precious treasures, especially the silver-relic altar of reverend Peter Grillinger from 1443, to the public, a museum was built within the presbytery of Mariapfarr, which opened in December 2002.
