"Silent Night..."

In 1995 an autograph was discovered, which, after a thorough scientific examination, proves that the lyrics to the famous Christmas carol "Silent Night, Holy Night" were written by Joseph Mohr in Mariapfarr in 1816. Consequently, this discovery led to the creation of a special documentation about Joseph Mohr and his carol in the parish- and pilgrimage museum of Mariapfarr.

The museum includes a documentation about the life of Joseph Mohr. It starts with his family tree, which can be traced back to the 17th century, and ends with his death in Wagrein in 1848. His ancestry in the Lungau, as well as his time as priest of Mariapfarr from 1815 to 1817 prove his strong ties to the Lungau. In addition, his first music teacher, his superiors in Mariapfarr and in Oberndorf and the designer of the memorial in Oberndorf, the famous artist and priest Mühlbacher, were all born in the Lungau area.

The distribution of the carol "Silent Night, Holy Night" is also documented in detail.
